The Efficiency of being Messy

A couple of weeks ago I had a layover in Prague that I wanted to use wisely and productively.  I meant to read all about it and plan ahead, so no time would get wasted. Not surprisingly, I found myself skimming the Prague Wikipedia page just before landing. Luckily, knowing myself, I had had the foresight to download it along with a map of the city the previous day.

When I landed I was sleep-deprived, still stressed from the last couple of weeks and a little clueless, a real mess, in short. A recipe for chaos and wasted time, you'd think, right?

To my surprise the exact opposite actually happened!

Operation Prague in 6h

synagogue clock charles bridge daughter of smoke and bone secret wall garden Thinking, "I don't have time to waste!" I rushed from the plane to the bus-station. This included: getting through pass control, changing money, bathroom and water stops, buying a bus-ticket, finding the right bus-station and missing 2 buses (Prague virgins beware: You blink, you miss!). All this in a place I'd never been before and don't speak the language of and in freaking 20 minutes!

This reminded me of an article I'd read (resembling this one), which headline said something like- "Researches show that messy people make more money and are more creative, better entrepreneurs and better parents". Or as I read it: "RESEARCHES (a.k.a The Words of the God of Science) PROVED that MESSY people are BETTER than YOU!!!"

As a disciple of the Order of Order (OoO) I got defensive. I scanned it quickly to see how I could dismiss it ("Everyone knows that Psychology isn't an EXACT science, right? Right??"), and tried to forget about it. Now I have to concede that maybe, sometimes, when you have a specific goal in mind, being disorganized may get you faster to a simple solution. I'm not saying I'm giving up on my continuous strive for Order, but maybe, sometimes, I'll try to just fly by the seat of my pants.

Any ideas on how to do that?
